During the alumni weekend, we are happy that several Duke Chinese alumni are invited to our panel discussion. The panelists will share their experiences and thoughts with the current students. This will be a great opportunity to connect to former Duke Chinese students and learn from their experiences. This event will be the last one for DCSSA 2008-2009 term. Everyone is welcome and lunch will be served.

李志勇: 1992-1996在杜克大学计算机系获博士学位。He then worked as a Staff Member at Sun Microsystems at Silicon Valley of California. At Sun, Zhiyong initiated the Java Benchmark effort across the company and that effort later on is adopted as the industry standard Java Benchmark SPECJVM98. Zhiyong left Sun at 1997 and joined IBM to work in a research group at IBM led by an IBM fellow. In 2000, Zhiyong left IBM to join a startup company as its lead principal engineer. Zhiyong is a Senior Manager at SAS Institute in charge of Java related technologies and Java Strategies for SAS. In his 8 year career at SAS, he has held the positions as the principal engineer (highest technical level at SAS), the lead application architect and the development manager for various products. Before coming to Duke, Zhiyong is a lecturer at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), where he received his Master Degree in Computer Science and Electric Engineering. He taught graduate students and led a team of researchers worked on government funded research projects for five years. Zhiyong hold three US patents and currently has one patent application pending. He has published over 20 papers in refereed Journals (in Chinese or English). As a volunteer, he is currently the Principal of Chinese School at Chapel Hill, which has over 350 students.
沈众:1970年生于北京, 1988年考入北京大学法律系, 1992年本科毕业, 次年进入杜克大学研究生院社会学系,1996年获杜克大学统计决策硕士学位毕业。 1996至2004年间, 作为SAS程序员(SAS programmer), 统计分析师(Statistician), 项目主管(Manager)和部门主管(Associate Director, Senior Director), 沈先生先后在多家世界知名制药企业统计与SAS编程部门任职, 从初级技术职位升任中层管理职位. 2004年获得绿卡后, 沈众先生放弃了稳定的公司职位, 创办了自己的房地产公司, 迁往佛罗里达州开始了艰苦的创业历程. 截止2009年四月, 沈先生已经成功创办了多家公司, 业务横跨房地产开发, 销售, 贷款, 管理, 和投资移民等多个领域. 同时也是杜克大学华裔校友会的发起人。
Zhong Shen: John was born and raised in Beijing, China and completed undergraduate study at Beijing University in 1992. He came to Duke University in 1993 as a candidate of PhD in Sociology. In 1996 John obtained a MS degree in Statistics and Decision Sciences and graduated from Duke University. In his second year at Duke, John served as President of Duke Chinese Student and Scholar Association (DCSSA). As a student leader, he was heavily involved and instrumental in various activities hosted by local Chinese community both on campus and off campus. In September 1996, John started his career in pharmaceutical industry as a programmer and statistician in Kalamazoo, MI. He started his own real estate business and moved to Florida in 2004 after eight years of work experience at four pharmaceutical companies. John appreciates his Duke education and feels that the Duke years have completely changed his life in a positive way. Feeling a debt to Duke and to Chinese alumni community that does not associate tightly with the school, John founded Duke Chinese Alumni Association (DCAA) as a non-profit organization affiliated to Duke Alumni Association. He has enjoyed continuing his many friendships at Duke and has derived significant satisfaction from being able to help his alma mater through DCAA.
樊卫华:1971年生于河南省。1992年毕业于武汉大学生物系,同年进入北京中国农业科学院生物技术中心,1995年获得硕士学位。1996年来到杜克大学,研究植物对病害的反应。于2002年获得植物分子遗传学博士学位。2002年至2005年在杜克大学医学中心从事对一种病原真菌的研究。2005年加入位于研究三角区的BASF(巴斯夫)公司从事农业生物技术方面的研究和产品开发。现在和妻子白雪芳,女儿凯嘉,儿子凯文居住在 Morrisville。平时以园艺,足球为爱好,是杜克大学蓝魔永远的支持者。
Weihua Fan: born in 1971 in rural Henan Province, China. Graduated from Wuhan University in 1992. Earned his Masters degree from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing, in1995. He came to the United States and Duke University in 1996 to pursue a scientific career in plant science and earned a Ph.D. in plant molecular genetics in 2002. As a postdoctoral fellow he studied pathogenic fungi in Duke Medical Center from 2002 to 2005. In 2005 Weihua joined BASF Plant Science in the Research Triangle Park for research and development in agricultural biotechnology. Weihua lives in Morrisville with wife Xuefang, daughter Claire and son Kevin. He loves soccer and gradening and is a Blue Devil forever.
