Regarding arts at Duke, the first thing that jumped to my mind is Duke University Museum of Art–DUMA. Because right now they are closing the former DUMA at the Science Building on east campus, we can only see a corner of the iceberg. Only small parts of the original collection of more than 13,000 pieces of art are shown at the lobby of the Science Building. But don’t worry. After October 2005, we will have the graceful new Nasher Museum of Art. For those who are eager to see what it will be like, please visit: http://www.duke.edu/web/duma/.
The next thing is the colorful life on campus. Compared to North Carolina State University which I graduated, this is the most obvious difference. Duke has more cultural and political events. I think this should be contributed to the comprehensiveness of Duke. Duke has more cultural and social departments.
You can get an updated info at the ticket box office located in Bryan Center. There are several booklets at the information desk. Look at the calendar at http://tickets.duke.edu/Calendar.html, you will see many colorful events. Don’t be scared by the price although it is already very cheap for Duke students. You have the chance to get in touch with those great art performances for free. The tip is to be a volunteer, sometimes ushers. This info can also be found at the information desk in Bryan Center.
AMERICAN DANCE FESTIVAL: http://www.americandancefestival.org/
At Duke’s Hospital, you can notice there are lots of ads about this annual event. This year’s focus is on modern dance and works of outstanding choreographers and companies of the world.
I believe that movies are the biggest benefit for students at Duke. Many good movies, both American and international, are shown in the spring and fall semesters, at weekdays and weekends. Sometimes even the first-round movies are shown. Besides, the tickets for students are much cheaper than in cinemas while the vision and hearing effects are almost the same. Prices now are: Freewater Films (Tues., Thurs., Fri.) are FREE for students, $4 for employees and $5 for the general public; Quadflicks Films (Sat. and Sun.) are $4 for Duke Students and Employees (cash or flex) and $5 for the general public. So you have lots of choices to go there and take a break from study and work. You can get more info at http://www.duke.edu/web/duu/visualartsindex.htm.
In summer or winter, there are not as many movies as in spring and fall semesters because students, especially those active undergraduates, have gone back home. However, there is still something you can attend. The Summer Music Festival is held annually. There are some other art series such as “Jazz on the Terrace series” and “Meet You in the Gardens” series.
Also, if you have a car, you can check the special events at NCSU and UNC. Their libraries often provide information about these events.
