Dear Newcomers:
Congratulations on your admission to Duke University and welcome to
join our Chinese community at Duke. Wish you the best on your new
journey in US. As a great tradition of Duke Chinese Student and
Scholar Association (DCSSA), we would be happy to arrange airport pick-
up (from Raleigh-Durham International airport, RDU) at your arrival in
US. However, because of the increasing number of new comers from China
in recent years, we would like to encourage you to find your pick-up
help on your own, e.g., contact Chinese students in your department at
Duke, or collage alumni. If you cannot find any contacts, please do
not hesitate to send us your arrival information and we will do our
best to help you. When sending us your arrival information, please
follow the format shown below and send it to the specific email box.

confirmation email after we arrange the pick-up help for you.

Watch Beijing 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony together at Duke

Beijing 2008 Olympics Opening ceremony is coming this Friday! DCSSA invites you to join us in celebrating the Olympics opening ceremony. The opening ceremony held at Beijing’s National Stadium will be televised via NBC at Griffith Theater. Olympics mascots and other gifts representing Chinese culture will be distributed to the first 30 audiences. Olympics bumper stickers will also be available for a limited number. Please come with friends and family and have fun.

为奥运加油―请来参加杜克校园CCTV4节目录制

CCTV4《华人世界》海外华人同唱奥运赞歌活动，原创歌曲＂我们唱＂的作词人是我们的杜克大学的同仁，作曲是中国国家交响乐团的团长，关峡，国家一级作曲家。CCTV４准备８月８日奥运会开幕当天用５分钟介绍这首歌。

此次节目的主持人邀请我们杜克的中国师生拍一段一分钟左右的录像在CCTV4的节目中播放，表达海外游子对北京奥运会的祝愿。DCSSA 在此邀请所有杜克的华人学生学者来参加杜克校园内的节目录制。录制时间地点如下：

“贝贝”鱼娃跳龙门

原型:是鱼娃，来自江河湖海。五行:为水.含义:代表繁荣，寓意对世界和平发展、合作共赢的祝福。在中国传统文化艺术中，“鱼”和“水”的图案是繁荣与收获的象征，人们用“鲤鱼跳龙门”寓意事业有成和梦想的实现，“鱼”还蕴涵着吉庆有余、年年有余。

“晶晶”是只大熊猫原型:以熊猫为原型，来自森林。五行:为木。含义:代表快乐，象征着人与自然的和谐共存，体现绿色和人文的奥运理念。晶晶是一只憨态可掬的大熊猫，无论走到哪里都会带给人们欢乐。作为中国国宝，大熊猫深得世界人民的喜爱。晶晶憨厚乐观，充满力量，代表奥运五环中黑色的一环。

“妮妮”是只北京燕
原型:以京燕为原型，来自天空。五行:为金。含义:代表幸运，是一只展翅飞翔的燕子，“燕”还代表燕京(老北京的称谓)，赞颂人类对美好人间的向往和对理念社会的追求。妮妮把春天和喜悦带给人们，飞过之处播撒“祝你好运”的美好祝福。

2008年5月19-21全国哀悼日–DCSSA号召所有中国同胞佩戴白花

China declared three Days of National Mourning for earthquake victims. The mourning period is May 19th to May 21th. There will be three minutes of silence nationwide starting at 2:28 p.m. (0628 GMT) ― exactly a week after the magnitude 8.0 quake struck Sichuan ― while horns of vehicles, trains, ships and air raid sirens wail in grief. All national flags will fly at half-staff at home and at Chinese diplomatic missions abroad.

As Chinese on Duke campus, we are closely tied to all the people in China. Therefore, we suggest DCSSA members wear white flowers from Monday to Wednesday to express our deepest grief over the victims and their families.

北卡三角区四川地震捐款方式

A massive earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit South-western China mid-afternoon Monday on May 12. China’s Xinhua News Agency reported that as of 7 p.m. Tuesday, southwestern Sichuan Province has reported 12,012 death in Monday’s quake, according to the disaster relief center under the State Council. Another 9,404 were buried in debris, 7,841 were missing and 26,206 people were injured, according to the headquarters. More deaths are expected to be detected and confirmed with every minute of the rescue efforts led by Premier Wen Jiabao who flew to the scene shortly after the earthquake. It was the worst natural disaster hitting the region in the last three decades. The damage to the property in the vast region is beyond estimation.

灾情
震中地区通信、交通、电力等全部中断，房屋、基础设施损毁严重。救灾初期
救援部队、救援队伍目前受阻，难以到达震中。

领导
四川汶川发生地震后，胡锦涛总书记立即作出重要指示，要求尽快抢救伤员，
保证灾区人民生命安全。国务院总理温家宝已经抵达地震灾区四川省都江堰市开
始指挥抗震救灾工作。

军队、地方政府已经全力参与到救灾工作中，人民群众也在积极自救，全国人
民正全力支援灾区。

积极宣传和传播地震知识

积极传播权威消息，拒绝谣言
相关消息以以上介绍之媒体渠道为准。识别地震谣传主要从以下几个方面进行：
1)是否具有科学性。例如：”某月某日某时将在某地发生某级地震的说法”肯定
是地震谣传，因为当前地震预报水平不可能对地震做出如此准确的临震预报。
2)是否符合我国地震预报的规定和国际惯例。例如”某专家、某机构”预报的地
震，这种消息必定是地震谣传，因为国务院《地震预报管理条例》中指出，
地震预报由省级政府发布，其它任何单位和个人都无权发布地震预报消息。
联合国也曾规定任何国家都无权进行跨国地震预报。
3)有的盲目猜疑，例如：有人将天气变化或自然界某些异常现象说成是将要发
生大地震的前兆，这类传言也不可信。

理解和支持政府
天灾难防，特别是地震最为难以预报，不发表追责负责人之文章，不在政府已
经积极投入抗灾时对政府工作不予足够支持和理解。

截止目前，四川地震中遇难人数已经超过12000，还有更多人被困等待救援。DCSSA邀请所有看到这封信的同胞共同参加烛光守夜，纪念在四川大地震中遇难的中国同胞；为现在依然被困的同胞祈祷祝福；并且精神支持和安慰所有在此次地震中受灾的家庭。守夜活动时间地点如下:

杜克大学中国学生学者联谊会（DCSSA）是由在杜克大学的中国学生、学者及教职员工组成的非赢利性互助服务组织，我们的宗旨是为会员服务，加强会员之间的联系，增进会员与周边社区以及杜克大学校友等的交流。

在2008-2009学年度中，DCSSA将继续传承以往的优秀传统，竭诚服务于杜克中国社区，并积极向杜克大学的更广大群体宣传中国的优秀文化。同时，DCSSA将进一步宣传中国的发展变化，努力推进杜克中国社区和其他社区的交流，增进相互之间的了解和信任。

新的学年中DCSSA的工作将主要围绕以下三个主题展开。

1．服务杜克学生。初到杜克的新生往往面临很多的困难，因此DCSSA将服务于新生作为工作重点之一。在今年的新生服务中，除了会继续提供杜克分类信息指导，新生接机服务，迎新晚会等活动之外，DCSSA还将努力提供定期的亚洲超市购物服务，以及为新生举办退税，购车等生活服务讲座。针对非新生同学，DCSSA将首次举办系列职业规划讲座，邀请杜克知名的华人教授与同学们一起分享他们的学术及人生经历；同时也将邀请成功的业界人士讲解美国就业现状和前景；此外还会举办专题讲座讲解工作申请、面试、简历材料撰写等技巧。除此之外，DCSSA也会通过经验交流会，座谈会等形式促进新生和老生，学生与学者之间的交流。
2．服务杜克中国社区。 服务于杜克中国社区是DCSSA最基本的职责。以往为大家喜闻乐见的活动会得到保留和进一步的发展，如庆祝中秋、春节等传统节日，每月的电影放映，有关就业移民的专题讲座等等。除此之外，DCSSA还将努力丰富活动的内容和形式，如开展各种类型的体育比赛，发展已有的运动社团并依据社区的需要创建新的社团；同时在传统节日方面，DCSSA力争将更多饱含文化内涵的传统节日纳入庆祝范围之内，如元宵节，端午节等。
3．加强对外交流。中国优秀的传统文化一直为全球华人所骄傲，在新的学年中，DCSSA会借助北京奥运会的契机，更加广泛的宣传中国的历史和文化。同时，加强对中国发展的介绍，通过举办中国发展讲座向广大的杜克社区宣传中国在各个领域所取得的进步。增进中国社区与杜克其他学生团体的交流也是DCSSA新一年的工作重点，通过各种形式的互动活动，我们将努力推进中国社区与全体杜克社区在思想上和文化上的交流，增进了解，增进信任。

在努力推进以上三方面服务之外，DCSSA还将进一步完善DukeChina网站，使其在提供更大信息量的同时更加人性化；加强杜克论坛（BBS）的功能，使其发挥更大的功效。同时加大对各项活动的宣传和报道力度，以便更好的服务于杜克中国社区。

新的一年中DCSSA会秉承先前的经验，丰富社区的生活，增进成员之间以及社区与外部的联系和交流，更好的为杜克广大的中国社区服务。

CAFA, Cary CS, RACL, CSCH, China Star, CAST-NC and UNC FACSS have joined together to make Beijing Olympics bumper stickers and distribute them free.DCSSA will distribute bumper stickers to Duke Chinese Community this Friday. Everyone is welcome. The bumper sticker was made from donation.The number is limited. First come, first serve.

To better serve the local Chinese and Chinese American communities, CAFA will again assist Chinese Embassy officials to process Chinese passport replacement and/or Chinese Visa applications on 5/4/2008.

Time: Sunday, 5/4/2008, 9:00am-12:00noon
Location: Stewart Theatre, Talley Student Center, NCSU, Raleigh, NC

To process the applications in an orderly and efficient manner, we require online pre-registration. Current CAFA members, current students, scholars, and employees at UNC, Duke, and NCSU with a valid ID are eligible to receive the passport renewal service. Interested applicants please first register your name and other relevant info at http://www.cafanc.org/events/register_visa.html
A $10 fee in cash or check payable to CAFA will be collected by CAFA for each passport that needs a renewal. Embassy collected fees are extra and payable to the Chinese Embassy. Money order or cashier’s check is preferred payments to the Chinese Embassy. Off site service in the Embassy will not charge credit card. Chinese passport renewal rules and application forms are available at Chinese Embassy’s web site:
